Dear Parents and Readers,
We are more than halfway through the season of Lent. I am always amazed how the school year has passed so quickly- once you leave the month of September, the days just zip by.
The Holiest of seasons, Easter is approaching and it is one of the earliest Easters in many years. There is so little time left for prayer, almsgiving and sacrifice. We do have a few weeks left to bring in pennies and change to aid the Parker Hunt medical fund with our Pennies for Parker. I would also like to suggest that we help the Parish Service Organization with their drive to help the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. If your children come home asking for lip balm, we just want to help the parish make a bigger donation. If you have already contributed to the project, there is no need for you to send in anything else.
Since the 2008 year began 9 weeks ago, the first grade had been very busy with the School Science Fair. We had two projects we were demonstrating in the science Fair. Thanks to our parent volunteers, Debbie Harmeling, Ralph Hulett and Sandy Enzweiler, we were able to prove that you can make ice cream if you can get the mixture cold enough quickly (a chemical reaction between the ice and the salt). We also proved that wearing a seat belt can keep you in your car (thanks to our crash test dummies that were belted to our Matchbox cars). Both projects were well received by the parents and other students presenting at the Fair.
Combine those busy days with FatTuesday, Ash Wednesday, Friday afternoon Stations of the Cross, Valentine’s Party, and Snow Days, and we find ourselves working so hard to catch up on our daily classroom work.
In March, we will participate in the Northern Ky. Health Department’s program called Five –A Day. This program offers the students a chance to focus on Nutrition and to try and eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day during that week. Those participating will receive some prizes along with a boost to their health. It also fits in nicely with our regular Science book’s look at Plants.
Looking ahead to the next few weeks will of course celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and then enter into some serious contemplation of the sufferings of Jesus on His way to Calvary.
We make a Holy Week box with items in it to help us remember Jesus’ crucifixion and death.
We then look happily to the glorious Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday Morning. Hosanna and Alleluia! I wish a Happy Easter to you and your family. Enjoy your time together and stay safe and happy!
Easter Blessings,
Cathy Cline
