Religion

  • Students will learn about what Catholics believe, how Catholics worship, pray and live.

  • Student units focus on Community, Reconciliation, the Word of God, Eucharist, and Christ's Peace.

  • Traditional prayer will be learned and prayed.

  • Students focus on the The Ten Commandments and prepare to celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the First Holy Communion.

  • Active participation in class and at the Mass is required.

Reading

  • Emphasis on instilling a love of reading as well as development of skills.

  • Students read a variety of fiction and non-fiction in various genres.

  • Students explore literature in drama, dance, and music at the Children’s Theatre.

  • Independent reading through the Accelerated Reader Program and the S.T.A.R. reading programs

  • Current events are read about and discussed in the Weekly Reader, which includes National Geographic topics.

  • Whole group reading includes books from the Magic Tree House series.

 Grammar

  • Grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure are stressed in Journal writing.

  • Lessons coordinate with our grammar book from the Treasures reading series.

  • We will use Daily Oral Language as well as Daily Language Review

Spelling

  • Used in conjunction with Treasures Reading Program

  • Tests on Friday unless a change in schedule is required

  • Spelling challenge words are incorporated in the whole language approach

 

Math

  • Emphasis on addition, subtraction, money, place value and telling time

  • Data analysis, graphing, probability and measurement are explored

  • Use of patterns, functions, and algebraic notation to analyze situations.

  • Make reasonable estimates and problem solve.

  • Investigate characteristics of 2- and 3- dimensional geometric shapes and symmetry.

  • Math games involving manipulatives reinforce skills and fact retention.

  • Timed tests involving math facts, to sharpen skills and increase speed and accuracy

  • World Geography and map study

  • Culture

  • Economics includes a 5 week Junior Achievement Course

  • Citizenship includes a 7 week program presented by Catholic Charities which includes Responsibility, Friendship, and Conflict Resolution.
